Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will sit with the chairmen and managing directors of government and private banks on Sunday (Dec 1) to find out the way to bring down the lending rates to single digits.
The meeting will be held at the National Economic Council auditorium in Dhaka's Sher-E-Bangla, said sources at the Finance Ministry.
In August last year, the government granted the bankers with a number of facilities after they had promised to maintain a single-digit lending rate.
Since then, only 11 banks have done so with another 37 banks are still lending at a rate of 12-20 percent.
On Nov 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting, once again instructed the officials concerned to ensure the single-digit lending rate at the banks.
