The Energy division will ascertain the requirement for gas in the industrial sector. It has decided to carry out a survey through Petrobangla.
The survey may begin after gathering information from gas distribution companies.
At present, the demand for gas in the country is around 3,000 million cubic feet. The supply is between 3,100 and 3,200 million cubic feet but if LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) import is increased then supply can be increased.
New entrants to industry regularly apply for gas connections though no one has a clear idea as to how much gas will be needed in the future.
To meet the gas crisis, the government has begun LNG import but it’s not enough.
Titas apparently cannot stop illegal gas connections being given. An official of the energy division, observes: “Our division does not have any idea as to how much gas will be needed to give connections to new applicants. Approval for more applications without taking into consideration the supply will result in disaster.”
A survey was also needed to ascertain the amount of gas being stolen, added the official.
