Govt to buy 1 million tonne of Amon paddy

Of the crops, the government will collect 600,000 tonne of paddy, 350,000 tonne of parboiled rice, and 50,000 tonnes of white rice.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Government Committee on Food Planning and Monitoring Committee in Dhaka on Thursday (Oct 31) with Food Minister Shadhan Chandra Majumder in the chair.
The media was briefed on the decision after the meeting, which was also attended by Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque.
The government will buy parboiled rice at Tk 36 per kg. White rice will be bought at Tk 35 per kg and paddy at Tk 26 per kg.
The procumbent of paddy will begin on Nov 20 and rice on Dec 1. It will continue Feb 28.
The food minister said local administrations would send the lists of farmers by Nov 10 this year and the lists would be uploaded in websites of union parishads.

After scrutinising the lists of upazila procurement committees, the paddy would be procured directly from the farmers as per the lists, he said.

Majumder said the Food-Friendly Progrmme of the government has been extended to seven months from five months marking the Mujib Year to be celebrated in the next year.

A total of 50,000 households are now getting rice at Tk 10 per kg for seven months under the programme, he added.

Replying to a query, Minister Razzaque said over 15.3 tonnes of Amon paddy are excepted to be produced this year.
Production cost stands at Tk 21 per kg paddy this year, he added.
