The central bank has held Bogura Municipality responsible for the shredded bank notes found next to Khowar Bill in Shahjahanpur upazila Tuesday (Sept 24).
The authorities of Bogura Municipality dumped the discarded notes in a different place rather than their designated dumping zone creating confusion amongst people, Bangladesh Bank assistant spokesperson GM Abul Kalam.
The central bank says that the shredded bank notes that made the news on Tuesday are actually discarded notes that have no actual value and called on people to not get confused.
In the statement, it was clarified that the notes were not burnt in order to avoid environmental pollution.
It added that in a media statement on May 30, the central bank announced that it will be disposing of the discarded notes through the local municipality or city corporation.
However, instead of doing that, the employees dumped the discarded notes into the water body, it added.
Locals informed the police on Tuesday after they found currency between Tk 10 to Tk 1000 shredded on the banks of Khowar Bill at Chandai village road, in Shahjahanpur upazila .
It was initially assumed that it was illegal money dumped to avoid the countrywide raids but Bangladesh Bank cleared it up that it was their discarded notes when police contacted the Bogura branch.
