Bangladesh to produce hydro-power with Bhutan

After Nepal, Bangladesh is going to reach an understanding with Bhutan over the production of hydro power.
The issue was discussed on Sunday (Aug 25) at the India-Bangladesh joint working group.
The matter will be finalized on Monday (Aug 26) at a power secretary level meet of the two countries.
Director General (DG) of Power Cell Mohamamd Hossain said: “At the meet, the MoU with Bhutan and importing for 340 megawatt of power from Tripura were discussed.”
Bangladesh is importing 160 megawatt of power from Tripura. Indian company GMR is constructing a power plant in Nepal. However there is contention over the rate of electricity.
An Indian high powered team led by power secretary, Subhash Chandar Gargi, is currently on a two day tour of Bangladesh and the team features Gurdeep Singh, MD of India’s biggest power company, Thermal Power.
The Indo-Bangla meet over power will be held on Monday at the Hotel Inter-Continental.
On Sunday, members of the visiting team went to Rampal Power Plant accompanied by power secretary of Bangladesh, Dr Ahmad Kaikaus.
The visiting team stressed on the importance of timely production of power at the Payra Thermal Power Plant.
Earlier there was talk of constructing a 100 megawatt solar plant through it was not discussed this time.
An official who took part in the recent meet, said: “Forty percent work of Rampal is complete.”
