There is a high demand for chemical free cows in the local market
Keeping Eid-ul-Azha in mind, farmers are passing a busy time fattening their cattle in Habiganj.
About 250 farms in the district have been working day and night to assure chemical free meat to customers, as Eid draws near.
Farmers in the region said they were using local methods in fattening their cows which did not involve the use of any contraband tablets or injections.
There is a high demand for chemical free cows in the local market.
Habiganj Department of Livestock officials said they were constantly monitoring the cattle farms, and providing the farmers with necessary assistance.
The cattle farmers said the prices of cows at their farms ranged from Tk 120,000 to Tk 300,000. They also said that all the cows were being fed chemical free local grass, and husk.
Sohel Miah, a farm owner in Sadar upazila’s Etbarpur village, while speaking to Dhaka Tribune, said, he had 30 cows in the farm which went through the fattening process.
He said, his cows had high demand in the market as the sacrificial animals were not fed or injected with harmful content.
“Customers even bought some of my cows right from the farm,” he said.
Ali Miah, employees of the farm, said: “The grass which are fed to the cows are produced in our farm.”
Another worker of the farm, Sajid Miah said: “A machine is there to feed the cows, where grasses are put in after getting properly sliced.”
Apart from grass and husk, the cows were also given rice flour, and gram to eat.
Habiganj Upazila Department of Livestock Official Dr Wahidul Alam said: “We are monitoring all the farms, and the farm owner are abiding by the rules of cow fattening.”
Dr Prakash Ranjan Biswas, another official of the department, said: “We are working to ensure injection free meat for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.”
