Govt wants RMG owners to clear workers’ pay by Jun 14

State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu.The government has instructed apparel factory owners to clear salaries and festival allowances withing Jun 14.
“Salary for May should ideally be provided by the first week of June and festival bonuses before the the holidays or by Jun 14,” said State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media after a meeting of the ‘Crisis Management Core Committee’, he said that garment workers will get holiday in phases to maintain factory production and ease traffic congestion on highways.
Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Jun 16 or 17 depending on the sighting of the moon.
“We have instructed the members of industry owners’ associations to pay the salary for May properly so workers can celebrate Eid happily,” said Chunnu before adding a vigilance team has been formed by the Factory Inspection Department over the issue.
The safety of workers travelling to their hometowns is a priority of the government, according to the state minister.
“We have asked the highway police and others to look after the issue,” he added.
