Rubana Huq, wife of former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Annisul Huq, will contest for the office of the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
Rubana collected the nomination for the president post as the managing director of Mohammadi Group.
Her late husband, Annisul was the president of BGMA for the 2005-06 term.
On Saturday (Mar 1), Rubana’s son Navidul Huq submitted the form to the BGMEA office on behalf of his mother.
Navidul, in a post on his Facebook account, said, “Mother is going to be the first female president of BGMEA. She started RMG business with my father (Annisul Huq) twenty years ago. Father had worked for BGMEA many years and was a president too,
“RMG industry is going through a hard time. I hope my mother and her board of directors will do good to face the future challenge,” reads the status.
Voting to the BGMEA will be held on Apr 6 to form the apex RMG business body’s leadership for the next two years.
As many as 35 directors will be elected through voting.
The last BGMEA election was held in 2015 when Siddiqur Rahman was elected as the president.
Rahman’s term expired in September 2017. However, the association’s leaders managed to prolong their term by getting a series of extensions from the commerce ministry.
