The country’s economy is at risk because of some unscrupulous bank officials and influential loan defaulters, says Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir.

His comments came on Monday (Feb 25) while addressing an event titled, ‘Ethics in Banking’ at the capital’s Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) auditorium.

“Certain irregularities undermine the achievements. Not only the irregularities but the over-ambition of some loan takers are responsible to creating risks in the banking sector,” he said before adding, “Collusion by some bank officials and influential loan defaulters are responsible for the economy facing risks.”

The Bangladesh Bank chief also said that the capacity of the central bank’s surveillance is being strengthened on a regular basis.

“The bank officials are receiving regular training in this regard and we are using the latest technologies for surveillance in the banking system,” he said.

“Besides, a separate wing, aimed at stability in the banking sector, is working in the central bank,” added the governor.
