Barapukuria to be operational from mid-September

Barapukuria Coal Power PlantThe Barapukuria power plant will go into operation from mid- September, informed, power secretary, Ahmed Kaikaus.

He said, "To stave off any problem, the government has decided to import coal and, a team has visited Singapore."

After this month, there won’t be any power scarcity in the northern part of the country, he contended.

The secretary made the comments at a media call organized on occasion of the power and energy week, 2018.

We need investment in distribution of power and the government is working to bring funds.

Barapukuria stopped production mid-June after its coal reserves were exhausted; it started a seven-day operation on Aug 20 and stopped on Aug 28. To keep the plant’s three units running, 5200 metric tonnes of coal are required daily.

The Barapukuria plant is facing corruption probe after 1 lakh 44 thousand metric tonnes of coal could not be accounted for.
Several high-level officials, including the MD Habibuddin Ahmed, has been withdrawn. The Barapukuria graft case is currently with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
