Internet users across the country have reported not being able to use internet-based communication tool Skype, mainly used for video calls.
The telecoms regulator has blocked access to the service from Bangladesh, according to a source.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) ordered all IIGs (International Internet Gateway) to block access to the site and its app for mobile devices late on Monday (Nov 19).
Using Skype will be blocked in Bangladesh until further notice, a senior official at an IIG, who preferred anonymity, confirmed Bangla Tribune.
The regulator, however, says no such directive was given to the IIGs.
“The BTRC did not instruct anyone to block social media,” said its Senior Assistant Director (media) Zakir Hossain Khan.
“We came to know from media reports that users are not being able to access it. It has not been blocked. It might be a technical problem,” he told Bangla Tribune.
The move comes amid BNP acting chief Tarique Rahman joining the screening process of the party’s prospective candidates for the Dec 30 election through videoconferencing from London.
