BNP’s Dhaka North mayoral candidate Tabith Awal and Dhaka South’s Ishraque Hossain speaking to the media on Sunday (Feb 2).The BNP made a case for calling a day-long shutdown over the Dhaka City polls saying that the demand came from the people.
“The demand for a shutdown came from the people. We are on the people’s side,” Tabith Awal, who contested for Dhaka North mayor, said on Sunday (Feb 2).
“The election wasn’t fair in the least bit. We never expected such an election,” he said.
Ishraque Hossain, who contested for Dhaka South said that the delay in announcing the results showed that the election was rigged.
“We saw that the Awami League didn’t let voters enter the centres. The result that was announced is completely made up,” he said.
The BNP called a day-long shutdown for Sunday (Feb 2), boycotting the results for the city polls where AL candidates Atiqul Islam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh won.
Although Jatiya Oikya Front supported the strike, it received lukewarm response from the people and vehicle movement remained normal.
