The ruling party has established one-party rule by "overpowering" the Election Commission (EC), says BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“Media is being controlled. The press is unable to report actual facts,” he said on Thursday (Jan 16) in Nilphamari while addressing the council of the party's local unit.
“The government has won elections with the help of the police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in past. They will repeat that [in upcoming Dhaka City polls],” said the senior BNP leader.
The Awami League has "destroyed" the hopes of a democracy, proper administration, indiscrimination in the country, for which the people have fought in 1971, according to him.
“Enemies at home are oppressing the people, who are deprived of their basic rights. The banks and stock markets have been marred by corruptions, polls-rigging is rampant in the country,” he said.
Crimes like, murder and rape now happens in broad daylight,” he said before adding, "This is what the people gone through the Liberation War for?"
