Govt unbending on Khaleda Zia’s bail issue

FILE PHOTOThe government has taken an uncompromising stance over the bail issue of incarcerated BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave such an indication when top AL leaders went to meet her on Wednesday (Oct 2).
“There cannot be any compromise on the issue of Khaleda Zia,” the PM is reported to have told AL general secretary, Obaidul Quader.
A delegation of BNP MPs led by Harunur Rashid, met Khaleda Zia on Tuesday (Oct 1) and said that if she is given bail then she is willing to go abroad for better treatment.
Later, Harunur Rashid met bridges and transport minister Obaidul Quader and talked about Khaleda Zia’s bail.
At the meet with party top brass, the Awami League chief is reported to have said: “I cannot do anything if anyone comes with a lobby for a controversial person.”
Later, Obaidul Quader said, alluding to what the PM had said: “The current drive against corruption will continue.”
At the unscheduled meet at the PM’s official residence, Matia Chowdhury, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Mrinal Kanti Das, Dr Hasan Mahmud and others were present.
