In the north, committees formed twice were cancelled; as a result, there’s a sense of indignation among workers and activists. Many in the party are inactive with entry of opportunists and hybrids.
The last council of Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League unit was held on Dec 27, 2012.
Since a long time has elapsed after the council, Presidium members Abdur Razzak and Faruk Khan were given responsibility of Dhaka south and north respectively.
Razzak, who serves as the agriculture minister, said: “Several attempts were taken to form a full- fledged committee but they were not approved due to countless complaints.”
A former leader says: “The president and general secretary did not form a committee because they want to maintain control of the ward and thana; and this was given tacit support by leading leaders of two sections.”
General Secretary Obaidul Quader has ordered a full-fledged committee by May 31, 2017.
On 5 Jul, 2017, a full committee for Dhaka city north was declared which was cancelled due to the protest of workers and activists.
Meanwhile, Dhaka city north gave ‘press release’ approving a 69 member committee. But this was abolished since it was reportedly formed without talking to Faruk Khan and Dipu Moni and there were allegations that the committee had been infiltrated by Jamaat and BNP.
AL north president A K M Rahmatullah, says: “Time for misunderstanding over committee is over and now we need to move fast with the committees.”
In the south, there is reportedly a feud between general secretary of south city, Shahe Alam Murad and mayor Sayeed Khokon.
There are allegations that both want their own people in the committee.
