BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi addresses the press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office on Sunday (June 3).The government is using the anti-narcotics raid to cover up political assassinations, claims the BNP.
“Those involved with smuggling in drugs are affiliated with the Awami League and patronised by ruling party leaders. What we are seeing in the name of the war against drugs are political killings,” Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Sunday.
Speaking to the media at the BNP headquarters, he cited a recent study, which found that Tk 240 billion worth contraband yaba tablets enter Bangladesh every year.
According to Rizvi, the government has resorted to extra-judicial killings to cling to power. “But it seems they forgot that nature takes its own revenge. A single unjust killing opens the door to several more.”
Blaming the prime minister of ‘committing oppression in broad daylight’, the BNP leader said, “She wants to make it clear how cruel and ruthless she can be.”
He claimed that jailed party chief Khaleda Zia was not being properly treated by the prison authorities.
“She has become ill in a 200-year-old prison. She has been imprisoned so that the government can have a voter-less election. The people are waiting for another farcical election like the one held in 2014.”
