File photo shows Gano Forum MP-elect Sultan Mohammad Mansur.Sultan Mohammad Mansur, who took oath as an MP defying his party Gono Forum's decision, has he had never been expelled from Awami League (AL).
“I was in AL once and I am in it now too. Though I contested the polls from Jatiya Okiya Front, neither AL expelled me ever nor and I left it. That’s why I have taken the oath.” Mansur told the reporters after paying homage to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Gopalganj’s Tungipara on Friday (Mar 22).
A former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union or DUCSU and president of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Sultan Mansur had risen as high as to the position of organising secretary in the Awami League.
He went under the fold of Gono Forum chief Kamal after he faced the wrath of the Awami League leadership for seeking reforms during the 2007-08 military-controlled caretaker government.
He later joined a loose political group, the Jatiya Oikya Prokriya led by Kamal Hossain and Bikalpadhara Bangladesh President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury.
On Thursday (Mar 21), Sutan Mansur went to Tungipara and stayed there overnight.
Later, he arranged a milad and doa mahfil there seeking salvation of the departed soul of Bangabandhu and his slain family members.
On Mar 7, Sultan, elected from the Moulvibazar 2 constituency in the 11th general election using BNP's election symbol as a candidate of the Jatiya Oikya Front, was sworn in, prompting Gono Forum to expel him from the party.
The party accused the Moulivibazar 2 lawmaker of committing acts devoid of parliamentary norms and morality by taking oath violating its decision.
BNP along with Gono Forum and some other parties joined the December 30 election in alliance under the banner of Jatiya Oikya Front.
BNP bagged six seats while Gono Forum two in the election.
The alliance turned down the election results bringing the allegation of “massive vote robbery” and decided not to join parliament.
