Eight parties, including the BNP have told the Election Commission that their candidates will contest the national polls with the symbol ‘sheaf of paddy’.
On Sunday, a BNP delegation handed over a letter signed by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to Commission officials.
The seven parties who will contest with BNP’s polls symbol (sheaf of paddy) are Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Khelafat Majlish, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JaGPa), Bangladesh Kalyan Party, Bangladesh Muslim League and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Bangladesh.
The parties are allies in the 20-party Alliance led by the BNP. Parties in the Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Front are yet to write to the Commission on polls symbol.
The EC has said that coalitions intending to contest the upcoming election on a single polls symbol have to notify it by Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Krishak Sramik Janata League led by Kader Siddique has written to the Commission on Sunday that it will be taking part in the election as an ally of the Oikya Front. It said candidates will contest with the party’s polls symbol or a symbol nominated by the coalition, where it joined last week.
