Party flag of Awami LeagueWith the national election drawing near, speculation about possible nomination from the political parties is rising. Ruling party AL feels that it will have to face an average of six nomination seekers for each seat. Policy makers of the party feel that against 300 seats, around 2500 nomination papers may be sold.
If BNP does not take part in the upcoming elections then the number of nomination seekers may rise even more.
In the 2014 tenth national elections, 1567 bought AL nomination papers which were around 1200 in 2008.
Eagerness among candidates is seen in a positive light by party policy makers because they feel that more nomination aspirants will trigger wider publicity.
AL presidium member, Dr Abdur Razzak, told Bangla Tribune: “AL is the most acceptable party among the people with our grassroots spread across the country.”
For obvious reasons, there’s interest to get an AL nomination, he added.
“However, party will nominate the most popular person among nomination seekers who will also be able to win.”
AL joint general secretary, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, said, “Support base has grown with the rising popularity of the party.”
This is the oldest political party in the country which played a pivotal role in the independence of the country, he observed and added, “But, nomination will only be given to the most suitable person.”
