BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.The trip to New York was on invitation from the United Nations, says BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“We have discussed the country’s current political scenario with the UN official designated by secretary-general,” he told the media on Monday at the BNP chief’s Gulshan offices.
He claimed that the New York tour was upon the UN chief’s invitation. “But he was out of the US then and the assistant secretary-general was in charge. We met him,” said the senior BNP leader.
Mirza Fakhrul said the briefed the UN official over Bangladesh current political situation. “It’s clearly stated in the UN charter that a member state’s government, opposition or an individual can raise any issue.”
Responding to query, he said, “I have met with the party’s acting chief and discussed the current situation of the country.
Mirza Fakhrul returned on Sunday ending his five-day tour. Along with Executive Committee member Md Tabith Awal, he left for New York last Wednesday.
BNP Assistant International Affairs Secretary Humayun Kabir flew to New York from London to join them.
They met Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenča at the UN headquarters.
They also sat with officials at the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the US State Department in Washington the next day.
Mirza Fakhrul started for London on Friday and met BNP acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman there before flying back home on Saturday.
