DNCC Councillor Rajib arrested on specific allegation: RAB

RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Sarwar Bin Kashem made the speaking to the media on Sunday (Oct 20) at 1 am after the raid at a house in Dhaka’s Bashundhara.Dhaka North Ward Councillor Tarequzzaman Rajib, who was detained on Saturday (Oct 19) as part of the casino crackdown, has been arrested over specific allegations, said the Rapid Action Battalion.
RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Sarwar Bin Kashem made the announcement early on Sunday (Oct 20), after the raid at a house in Dhaka’s Bashundhara.
“There are allegations of extortion, land grabbing and various crimes against him,” he said and added that they conducted the raid based on a tip-off that Rajib was hiding at a friend’s house.
During the raid, RAB seized seven bottles of foreign liquor, one unlicensed gun, one magazine, three rounds of ammunition, Tk 33,000 in cash and a passport. “He couldn’t show us any documents for the gun. It’s an illegal weapon.”
Responding to queries on since when he was in hiding, he said, “As far as we know he has been in hiding at the house since Oct 13. His friend is abroad.”
He added that they were also scrutinising whether Rajib was trying to flee the country.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained DNCC ward councillor Tarequzzaman Rajib from a house at Bashundhara Residential area in Dhaka on Saturday (Oct 19).

Rajib, who had been serving as the ruling party ruling party youth front, Jubo League's Dhaka Metropolitan (North) unit joint general secretary, was expelled following the arrest, the front’s General Secretary Harunur Rashid confirmed Bangla Tribune.
After detaining the councillor for DNCC ward 33, from Bashundhara, the elite police unit raided his house in Mohammadpur house.
Rajib allegedly accumulated vast amount of wealth since he became a councillor.
He had been absent from all his offices and Mohammadpur residence since he went into hiding.
Rajib was elected ward councillor during the 2015 during DNCC polls as a rebel candidate after failing bag a party ticket.
He was also suspended as a joint convener of Jubo League's Mohammadpur unit after his followers beat a local freedom fighter but the order was withdrawn later.
Despite the known source of only a monthly remuneration of Tk 36,000 as ward councillor, Rajib owns several houses, lands, and luxury vehicles. He is reportedly accompanied by his musclemen whenever he travels.

He reportedly spent Tk 60 million to build the duplex house in Mohammadia Housing Society on a five-katha plot although just six years ago, he and his wife were living in a Tk 6000 rented flat in Mohammadpur.
Law enforcers have been raiding different clubs across Bangladesh, busting illegal casinos since Sept 18.
The raids led to the arrest of a number of people, including high profile Jubo league leaders such as expelled Dhaka South Jubo League President Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, his accomplice Arman, expelled organising secretary of Jubo League's Dhaka south unit Khalid Mahmud, Kalabagan Krira Chakra President and ex-Krishak League leader Shafiqul Alam Firoz, Jubo League leader and businessman GK Shamim, Mohammedan’s Director-in-Charge Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan.
Councillor of DNCC Ward 32 Habibur Rahman Mizan was also arrested and charged under the arms and money-laundering acts.
