File Photo/Mahmud Hossain OpuThe High Court (HC) has expressed embarrassment over a plea seeking a Tk 100 million compensation for slain Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad from the university authorities and has dropped the matter from the cause-list.
The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice MdAshraful Kamal gave the order on Tuesday (Oct 15).
On Tuesday (Oct 13), Supreme Court lawyer AKM Foyez filed a petition on behalf of lawyer Shahin Babu seeking Tk 100 million in compensation for Abrar’s family, to be paid in full by BUET authorities.
The writ also challenged the failure of university authorities for the murder and said that if the order is given, it will open up a way for victims of ragging on-campus to seek compensation.
It also sought security for Abrar’s family and a judicial probe into the murder.
On Oct 7, Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death.
A group of BCL BUET unit leaders and activists bludgeoned Abrar to death allegedly for his social media post criticizing the recent Bangladesh-India deal on sharing the water of Five River.
Abrar's father BarkatUllah filed a murder case against 19 people with the capital's Chawkbazar police on Monday (Oct 7) evening.
The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for and capital punishment for the murderers.
The BUET authorities also banned the activities of all political student bodies on the campus amid the student protest.
