Nusrat murder: HC orders probe into magistrate's role

Nusrat Jahan RafiThe High Court ordered the government to open an inquiry against Feni Additional District Magistrate PKM Enamul Karim in connection with the sexual harassment and murder of madrasa girl Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

Karim also heads the governing body of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, where the 18-year-old studied.

The court ordered the secretaries to the education and public administration ministries to submit the probe report by 30 days .

The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader gave the order on Monday (Jul 15) after hearing a writ petition filed by Advocate Eunus Ali Akond. Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmud Basher represented the state.

The court also issued a rule asking the government and Magistrate Karim to explain by four weeks why their inaction regarding the incident, should not be declared illegal.

Nusrat, who was an Alim examinee, suffered 80 percent burns when she was set on fire on Apr 6 on the roof of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, for refusing to withdraw sexual assault charges against now suspended madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Daula.

After she was set on fire, her family filed another case against eight people, including Siraj, on Apr 8.

The 18-year-old girl died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Apr 10, after battling with burn injuries for five days.
