Stay on Sagira Salam murder case lifted after 28 yrs

The order by the bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman came on Wednesday (Jun 26).
On Jul 25, 1989, Sagira Morshed Salam was shot dead by a mugger in front of the Viqarunnisa Noon School at Dhaka’s Bailey Road, where she had gone to pick up her daughter, who was a second grader then.
Her husband Abdus Salam Chowdhury filed the case with Ramna Police Station the same day.
Police submitted the charge sheet to the trial court against a Minto alias Montu. The charge sheet was placed on January 17, 1991 and the court also recorded statements of seven witnesses.
No arrests were made over after the killing on broad daylight.
During the trial proceedings, name of one Maruf Reza came into light when the court was recording statement of one of the witnesses.
Then the lower court on May 23, 1991 directed police to further investigate into the case.
Maruf Reza filed a revision petition with the High Court challenging the lower court order for further investigation.
On Jul 2, 1991, the trial proceedings and its further probe were stayed by the High Court.
On Wednesday, the High Court lifted the stay clearing the trial to proceed and ordered the lower court to finish the proceedings in three months.
