Representational imageAt least 142 people have been killed and 324 sustained injuries across Bangladesh during the 11-day vacation of Eid-ul-Fitr, says a recent study.
The deaths occurred in 95 road accidents on various highways, and national, inter-district, and regional roads, between May 30 and Jun 9, says data compiled by the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR), reports Dhaka Tribune.
The report was prepared on the basis of national dailies, regional newspapers, and online news portals and agencies.
The Eid trips home on highways and waterways were comparatively smooth this year, except for road accidents, said the organization in a statement issued to the media on Monday.
Holiday travellers failed to get satisfactory service from the Bangladesh Railway, the statement adds.
NCPSRR General Secretary Ashis Kumar Dey said they identified six major reasons for road accidents:

  • Competing tendency among drivers and reckless driving on free roads to make up for time lost in gridlock on highways and at ferry ghat crossings.
  • On duty traffic police, lax and unconcerned on long Eid holidays
  • Harassment by passengers pressuring drivers to reach destinations on time
  • Temporary physical and mental distress of drivers having to make extra trips and carry more passengers
  • Tendency of drivers to overtake others in violation of traffic rules
  • Motorcycles and three-wheelers on roads and highways
