Customs authorities detained 35-year-old Rajib Dewan with 65 gold bars weighing 6.5 kilograms from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.Customs authorities have detained one man with 65 gold bars weighing 6.5 kilograms from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The detainee, 35-year-old Rajib Dewan, was on a Singapore Airlines flight that landed in Dhaka from Singapore at around 11pm on Monday (May 20) said Airport Customs Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury.
Chowdhury said that Rajib was being monitored from the boarding bridge and he was asked to declare any taxable items once he crossed the green channel.
He denied carrying any such items and didn’t co-operate with authorities while searching him.
“The archway machine after a long search found traces of metal in his pocket,” said the DC.
He added that six packets covered in white scotch tape were found in various parts of the trousers he was wearing.
“A total of 65 gold bars each weighing 100 grams were found in those six packets,” he said and added that the gold has a street value of Tk 35 million.
Rajib has been was handed over to the police after legal action was taken against him under the Customs Act, 1969 and Special Powers Act, 1974.
