The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has identified 101 government sectors as corrupt.

As a part of an initiative to put an end to corruption in government organizations, the ACC has raided 25 of the 101 government sectors it has identified.

Addressing the proceedings, ACC Assistant Director (Public Relations) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said, "All these government offices identified as corrupt will be raided, and drives will be conducted one-by-one."

"We, since last January, have conducted a total of 90 drives as a part of this initiative. During which, 18 people have been arrested and 22 cases have been filed."

According to sources, as per the directives provided by senior officials of the government, the ACC's enforcement team started conducting drives in different government service sectors from the beginning of 2019.

Most of the sectors recognized as corrupt are from the government service sector, the ACC said.

All allegations regarding corruption in the government service sector reached the ACC through the national hotline 106; that came into existence on Jul 27, 2017. This also led to the anti-corruption drives conducted by the enforcement team of ACC. 

However, in 2019, the intensity and the reach of these drives and raids have increased greatly.  

The ACC branded a total 74 sectors belonging to the: Ministry of Finance, Civil Aviation Authority, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Directorate General of Health, and the Ministry of Education, as corrupt.

The list of corrupt government sectors and organizations also includes: Rajuk; Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs; Ministry of Religious Affairs; Chittagong Port Authority; Bangladesh Land Port Authority; Roads and Highways Department; Department of Environment; Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA); Forest Department; National Housing Authority; Department of Prisons and its hospitals; Passport Office; Titas Gas; Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board; Directorate General of Food; Department of Social Services; CBA; Water Development Board; City Corporation, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI); Settlement Office; Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa); Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC); and Power Development Board among others.

According to ACC sources, 11 sectors in Directorate General of Health, 33 sectors from the Finance Ministry, 11 sectors in the Civil Aviation Authority, eight sectors of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines; 11 sectors related to the Ministry of Education have been marked as corrupt, by the ACC.

Confirming the matter, ACC Commissioner Md Mozammel Haque Khan said: "In the year of 2017 the ACC formed 25 institutional teams to control and prevent corruption in government organizations.

"Each team was instructed to submit reports by recommending how to stop corruption, harassment of government service seekers, and the waste of government resources; while keeping in check the existing laws, rules, and due procedures."

"The recommendations reports made by our teams have been sent to the departments concerned. We are also continuing the drives in these government sectors," he added.
