Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) women's wing chairman Mahfuza Akter Kiron has been sent to jail on charges of making derogatory remarks against the prime minister after she was arrested on Saturday (Mar 16).
Her arrest comes two days after a warrant was issued by a Dhaka court after a sports organises sued her.
A team of Motijheel police arrested Kiron, a FIFA council member, from the city’s Dahnmondi on Saturday (Mar 16) morning, Inspector Md Monir Hossain told Bangla Tribune.
She was produced before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court, which sent her to jail after denying her bail plea, court police’s Jalal Uddin told Bangla Tribune.
On Mar 13, the court of chief metropolitan magistrate ordered her arrest after a libel suit was lodged the previous day.
Abul Hasan Chowdhury Prince, a permanent member of Mohammedan Sporting Club and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club as well as vice-president of Badda Jagoroni Club, filed the case accusing Kiron for making 'derogatory remarks against the prime minister.'
Meanwhile, the BFF has opened an inquiry into the allegations.
Its President Kazi Salahuddin has formed a three-strong probe panel led by BFF Senior Vice-President Adbus Salam Murshedy, which has been told to file a report as soon as possible to the executive committee.
