Supreme CourtA petition has been filed with the High Court seeking compensation for the families of the three people who were killed and 20 who were injured during a clash with Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) at Thakurgaon.
Supreme Court lawyer Tonoy Kumar Saha lodged the petition with the bench of FRM Nazmul Ahsan and KM Kamrul Kader on Thursday (Feb 14).
The home secretary, BGB director general and BGB-50 battalion commanding officer have been made defendants.
The writ also sought a HC rule asking why the incident should not be declared illegal and the families of the victims should not be provided with due compensation.
It also sought an explanation on why disciplinary actions should not be taken against the BGB members involved with the incident.
On Feb 12, three people were killed and 20 were injured in a clash between BGB and the villagers of Thakurgaon’s Haripur Upazila.
BGB claims that the deceased are members of a cattle smuggling group.
However, according to the villagers they were legitimate traders. They said that the victims were on their way to the market with the cattle when BGB seized the animals saying they were smuggled in from India.
An argument broke out and at one point BGB opened fired which killed two people on the spot and another died on the way to the hospital.
