Supreme Court of Bangladesh. BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainA petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) seeking the withdrawal of Chatkhil police OC Shamsuddin over the shooting of BNP’s Noakhali-1 candidate Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon.
Khokon’s counsel Sanjid Siddiqui filed the plea on Thursday (Dec 20)after the Election Commission (EC) did not respond to a plea that Khokon filed with them on Wednesday (Dec 19).
“The hearing might take place on Dec 23 in the court of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam,” Siddiqui said.
Khokon who currently serves as BNP’s Joint Secretary General on Wednesday filed a plea with the EC seeking the withdrawal of OC Shamsuddin after investigation, saying that fair polls in the constituency was impossible as long as he was in charge.
He also brought allegations of aiding with illegal arms dealing and arrest trade against the police official.
Police arrested BNP leader Bipul Islam Patwary while hanging campaign posters and OC Shamsuddin let him go after taking Tk 70,000 from him and he has been helping with the illegal arms hauling in the area, Khokon said in his plea.
He further said that Jubo League and Chatra League leaders vandalized and robbed the house of Hatpukuria BNP chief Md Kamruzzaman on Dec 17, in the presence of police and when asked, the police officers said that it was an order from the OC.
However, since the EC did not take any steps against the complaints, a writ was filed with the HC.
The BNP leader was severely injured in Noakhali after being shot with buckshot pellets during a clash between Awami League and BNP supporters. He had filed a plea with the EC on Dec 16, seeking the withdrawal of Sonaimuri police OC which was granted.
