Convicts cannot contest polls

The Appellate Division has stayed the High Court’s order staying the jail term handed to Jashore-2 BNP candidate Sabira Sultana. As a result, any other polls aspirants who are sentenced to more than two years, won’t be able to take part in the upcoming national election.
The full bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Sunday (Dec 2).

Earlier, on Nov 29, Jashore Jhikorgacha Upazila Chairman Sabira Sultana petitioned the High Court over a six-year jail term awarded to her over a graft case. After the High Court stayed the sentence handed to her by the trial court, State and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) moved to appeal against the stay order.

On Saturday (Dec ) the chamber judge stayed the High Court’s decision and forwarded the matter to the Appellate Division for decision.
