The Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinations might be abolished from next year, said Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon.
“The National Education Policy may be revised so that only the Junior School Certificate examinations are held from next year,” he told the media on Sunday (Nov 18).
Menon said that the amount of hard work a child has to go through for the tests in the formative years of their life is truly a matter of concern.
The tests only serve to terrify the children and concern the guardians, he added.
The Primary School Certificate (PSC) and Ebtedayee Examinations 2018 began at 7,410 centres across Bangladesh on Sunday.
Over 20 million students sat for the PEC exams and over 300,000 students registered for the Ebtedayee examinations, which are slated to end on Nov 26.
A total of 3,294 special-needs examinees, including 231 Ebtedayee students will appear for the examinations.
Since the government started these examinations in 2009, it has been subject to many criticisms with educationalists, guardians and various other sectors demanding its abolition.
