In the backdrop of growing political tension in Sri Lanka, Colombo has urged the other South Asian countries to remain united to thwart foreign pressure.
The newly appointed foreign minister Sarath Amunugama on Wednesday had a meeting with envoys of SAARC countries to discuss the current political situation, sources said.
Envoys of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Maldives attended the meeting.
The political crisis started when Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and replaced him with former president Rajapaksa on Oct 26.
Meanwhile, sources in Colombo said there is an indication that the parliament will be convened on Mar 5 when newly appointed Mahinda Rajapakse will occupy the seat of prime minister.
Rajapakse will have to prove his majority in the parliament of 225 seats.
He also had a meeting with Chinese envoy just after he was declared as premier on Oct 26.
Rajapaksa and Sirisena both visited Bangladesh as president and Dhaka has close relations with the country.
The political situation turned violent as one killed and two injured when former minister Arjuna Ranatunga wanted to enter his office on Oct 28.
The Western world including the United States and United Nations in separate statements has urged Sri Lanka to stick to constitution and avoid any political turmoil.
Speaker of the Lankan Parliament in a letter to President expressed his grave concern that the sacking of Ranil Wickremesinghe might bring serious and undesirable consequence.
However, his deputy said, Mahinda Rajapakse’s appointment is done in line with the constitution.
