Transport operator Jabale Noor will pay Tk 1 million as compensation to the families of the two dead students in line with a High Court order.
The development came after Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) filed a report on the HC order on Sunday (Aug 12).
On Jul 29, Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College students Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib were killed as a bus ploughed into a group of students while they were waiting for transport at a stoppage on the city’s Airport Road.
Nine others were also injured in the incident.
“Jabale Noor authorities sought time to pay the compensation, which the HC rejected setting Oct 7 to hear the BRTA report,” defense counsel Ruhul Kuddus told Bangla Tribune.
The HC court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam will hear what measures the BRTA has taken to ensure road safety and what criteria it follows to issue driving licence.
On Jul 30, in a response to a writ the HC ordered Jabale Noor to pay Tk 500,000 each to the victims’ families immediately.
HC also issued a rule asking to explain why a directive should not be issued on the owner of the company to give Tk 20 million as compensation to each of the families of the two students
