As many as 11.6 million animals, which include cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep, are ready to be slaughtered as sacrificial animals during the Eid-ul-Azha, the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) says.
Of them, 4.457 million are cows and buffaloes, while 7.1 million are goats and sheep, it said in a statement on Sunday.
Last year the stock was a little over 10.42 million before the Eid.
The DLS said that a medical team will be assigned for all cattle markets while for the larger ones there will be two teams and in Dhaka’s Gabtoli, the largest one in the capital, will have four.
It will also take steps to curb use of steroids and hormones, the statement said.
The department said it will seek the Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations’ cooperation to ensure that the animals are slaughtered at designated places and that the waste is disposed of properly.
