Hasina’s India visit to be marked by several MoUs

PTIBangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is coming to Delhi on Oct 3 on an official visit. Initially, the main aim was to take part at the India Economic Summit, but later, at the request of India, a bi-lateral dimension has also been added to the tour. During this visit, Sheikh Hasina will have a personal meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi.
There is a strong possibility that a slew of MoUs will be signed between the two countries on Oct 5 at Delhi.
Hasina last visited Delhi in April 2017. The Bangladesh PM has been asked to take part in the economic summit to relate the remarkable tale of Bangladesh’s progress.
Deputy prime minister of Singapore Heng Swee Keat, tennis star Sania Mirza, one of the proprietors of Apollo Hospitals, Shovona will also share the stage with the Bangladesh PM.
DURING the last two and a half years, Bangladesh was elevated from Least Developed Country status (LDC), to a developing one with the highest GDP in South Asia, growing annually at 7.86 per cent and this extraordinary achievement will be discussed at the summit.
Bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India is around $ 10-11 billion and using the growth story of Bangladesh, the PM will try to attract fresh investment. Bangladesh foreign ministry sources say that the PM will invite Indian industries to invest in three Special Economic Zones( SEZs) made for India in Bangladesh.
She will remind them of the ‘buy-back’ facility by manufacturing products at low cost in Bangladesh.
On the first day of the tour, the Bangladesh embassy in Delhi will arrange a welcome meet and dinner where policymakers will be present.
At the meet with Indian PM Narendra Modi, the progress of fifty working groups engaged in expanding bilateral relations will be assessed, be followed by the signing of MoUs.
The issues to be covered are: increase of air connectivity between Bangladesh and India, efforts to rAise connectivity by sea along with mutual shipping port facilities, India’s participation at the 100 year celebration of Bangabandhu’s birthday, increasing the number of consulates of both countries plus the effort to establish a Bangladesh mission in Chennai along with the framework for the river management of 54 rivers that flow between both countries.
Sheikh Hasina will come back to Dhaka on Oct 6.
