The transgender people, commonly known as Hijras, will be listed as the third gender in the electoral roll now.
“The decision came during Election Commission’s meeting on Tuesday”, Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed told the media.
The move comes over four and a half years later the community received official recognition.
On Nov 13, 2013 a cabinet meeting officially recognised the gender identity of Hijras and approved a policy on the matter.
Voters will now be able to pick the ‘Hijra’ gender identity alongside the ‘male’ and ‘female’ options.
However, the transgender people already registered as voters will have to amend their identity. “The Commission will not do it, if any one wants to change then it will be done,” said EC Secretary Ahmed.
