Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina delivers her introductory speech at a meeting of the AL Advisory Committee and Central Working Committee at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka on Friday (Jul 12). FOCUS BANGLAPrime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Bangladesh has a capability of tackling any natural disaster, reports BSS.
“The officials and volunteers concerned start working when any disaster hits the country … there is no need to give any directives to them,” BSS quoted Hasina as saying on Friday (Jul 12).
Her remarks came amid the reports on incessant monsoon rains overnight triggering floods in at least 10 districts and swelling waters in three of Bangladesh’s four river basins, marooning thousands of people and disrupting road communications in different areas.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) on Friday (Jul 12) warned water levels in rivers could rise further while reports suggests erosion of bank lines in some areas including Manikganj worsened further the deluge situation, reports state news agency BSS.
“All the major rivers are in rising trend . . . all the major rivers may (continue to) rise in next 72 hours, the FFWC in its latest bulletin said on Friday.
But the centre predicted a “rapid rise” of the water levels in rivers in northeastern Sylhet region, southwestern greater Chattogram ranging from Feni to Hill Tracts and southwestern Barishal region in the next 24 hours until Saturday (Jul 13).
People walking in knee-deep water as flash floods and rainfall inundated low-lying areas in SunamganjIn this connection, the premier said her government is taking information frequently about flood, rains and river erosion.
“The officials concerned are performing their responsibilities and there is no relaxation in this regard,” she said.
Hasina, also ruling Awami League president, was delivering her introductory speech at a meeting of the AL Advisory Committee and Central Working Committee at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka, reports BSS.
The AL president, however, said the political parties will have to remain active in this regard.
“Awami League always played a pioneering role during past disasters,” said Hasina.
