The Awami League and BNP-backed mayoral aspirants will begin their official campaign from Monday for the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls scheduled to be held on June 26.
Earlier, AL-backed candidate Jahangir Alam collected his symbol ‘boat’ and BNP-backed Hasan Uddin Sarker collected his symbol ‘paddy sheaf’ from the regional election commissioner Rakibuddin Mandol.
Marking the city corporation election, Gazipur Peshajibi Somonnyo Parishad will organise a view exchange meeting at Gazipur Press Club at 11 am on June 20.
It is mentionable, seven candidates from Awami League, BNP and other parties are vying for mayor post while 254 will contest for 57 general councilor posts. In addition, for the 19 reserve seats 84 candidates will compete.
The city corporation has 1.13 million voters in 57 wards.
570 thousands male and 567 thousand female voters will have the opportunity to exercise their franchise in the election to be held on Jun 26.
This is the second election after Gazipur City Corporation was established. In the first election in 2013, the total voter was 1.03 million.
