The High Court has come down hard on the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) for not complying with its order to take off 52 substandard food items.
On Wednesday (May 23), the bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al Jalil ordered the BFSA chairman to appear before it on Jun 16 after issuing a rule seeking an explanation over why the food safety authority chief will not be punished.
The court said it has been found that the BFSA has only exchanged some letter while the banned food items are still available in the market.
The HC on May 12 directed the government to immediately remove from the market the 52 food items that have been found substandard by Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution.
On that day, the BFSA and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection were asked to take necessary measures to this effect and submit a report to it in 10 days.
