A general view of Supreme Court. FILE PHOTOIt’s believed that the four storied annex building of the Supreme Court is rickety and since it’s very old, using it has becoming dangerous.
However, despite risks, around nine thousand lawyers work here.
Lawyers have often complained of congested working conditions and have underlined the need for the building to be re-constructed with the construction of another multi-storied structure.
Former president of the supreme-court lawyers association, advocate Yousuf Hossain Humayun, told Bangla Tribune: “The building is risky but should only be demolished once an alternative arrangement is made for the lawyers.”
One lawyer said that the building shakes when a large lorry passes it or if there’s lightning or a thunderstorm.
“The authority must ensure a secure atmosphere, otherwise they will have to take responsibility of an accident,” added the lawyer.
Former president of the supreme-court lawyers’ association, Jainul Abedin, made an application to the housing and works minister on 20 February last.
Abedin told Bangla Tribune: “The building is old and the foundation is weak, a survey done in 1997 revealed that the depth of earth underneath the structure is inadequate.”
Meanwhile, current president A M Amin Uddin, adds: “This is an old building and it shakes when people walk together but we cannot call it risky unless a proper survey is carried out.”
