Malaysia supports Hasina’s proposal for new regional bloc

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina meets Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at the latter’s residence on Monday (Apr 22). FOCUS BANGLAMalaysia has supported a Bangladeshi initiative to form a regional bloc with an objective of advancing economic integration in the region.
The proposed South and South East Asian Cooperation (SEACO) is a private sector and track-II level forum of five OIC countries in the region- Bangladesh, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Maldives.
The issue was discussed among Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Musa Hitam and Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam in Kuala Lumpur Monday.
The initiative got the spontaneous support from the Malaysian side, said a press release issued by the foreign ministry.
The forum in the emergence is going to function in the model of World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) exclusively with the agenda of economic cooperation among the member countries and their neighborhoods.
Bangladesh has taken the initiative and ready to host SEACO’s launching conference in Dhaka towards the end of June 2019 with expected participation of the foreign ministers along with the public and private stakeholders.
