Some 700, 000 Rohingyas fled Myanmar since August 2017. REUTERSExperts and civil society members have urged the government to respond to International Criminal Court request by the scheduled time.
They were speaking at an international seminar on “Accountability: International Criminal Court and the Rohingya Crisis” at the Senate Bhaban of the Dhaka University Monday.
Philip M Ruddock, former Father of Australian Parliament and Mayor of Hornsby, said, “We have to have evidence to try the perpetrators.”
The veteran parliamentarian said, “The international community has the responsibility to tell the Myanmar regime to change their modus operandi.”
He was of the view that sanction on Myanmar would have a significant impact on the behaviour of the current quasi-military regime.
Citing an example, he said, Sanctions on North Korea and Iran bore positive result and it should also be applied in Myanmar case.
Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed said the best route for exercise of jurisdiction by the ICC would be if Bangladesh refers the matter to the prosecutors for investigations.
He said, the other way is if the prosecutor suo moto initiates an investigation into the matter.
An effort is ongoing to collect evidence against the Rohingya atrocities and it would help to make the case at the ICC, he said.
Dhaka University Professor and Director of Centre for Genocide Studies Imtiaz Ahmed, there is enough evidence to proof that crime against humanity occurred in Myanmar.
He said, from day every action of the Myanmar authorities and Rohingyas were digitised and it would not be easy for Myanmar to get away this time.
About sanction, he said, China, Russia and India need to be changed to impose punitive measure against the rogue country.
About the role of India, he said the neighbouring country had literally taken a failed stance on Rohingya issue.
He said, Indian position never satisfied Bangladesh and on the other hand Myanmar at the end tilted towards China.
