‘Shootouts’ in drug raids continue with 11 more killed

The body of Sagir Khan, who Barguna police claim was killed in a shooting incident between two drug gangs.As many as 11 people have been killed across the country between late Friday and early Saturday in alleged shootouts amid a crackdown in drugs by law enforcers.

Two people were killed overnight in Cumilla and Dinajpur each while one each in Mymensingh, Barguna, Pabna, Kurigram, Joypurhat, Chandpur and Thakurgaon.
Police claimed all of victims were involved with drug peddling and that some of them were wanted in several cases.
At least 60 people have been killed across Bangladesh since the recent anti-drug raids began a week ago.
The security forces’ accounts on these alleged shooting incidents are similar — the victims getting caught in cross-firing during gunfights between them and drug dealers.
Families of several victims, however, claim that their relatives were held by police before the death was reported.
Rights activists—home and abroad—describe the incidents as ‘extrajudicial killings’ and called on the government to end them.

CUMILLA

Babul, 40 Almas, 36 were killed in a ‘shootout’ with police at Brahmanpara Upazila in Cumilla on Saturday.

The ‘gun battle’ took place at Bagra area of the Upazila around 1:30am, said the OC Abu Mohammad Shahjahan.

Acting on a tip off, a team of police led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Sheikh Md. Salim and Brahmanpara OC Shahjahan took position at Bagra area, said police sources.

The victims and their accomplices opened fire on police sensing their presence.

In retaliation, police also fired 16 rounds of bullets .The two were severely injured and died while taking to the hospital.

Both Babul and Almas were accused in several cases filed with police.

Police found a gun and 40 kgs of cannabis from the spot.

Total of six alleged drug-traffickers have been killed since last four days.

DINAJPUR
Sabdarul, 40, has been killed in a ‘shootout’ with RAB in Birganj Upazila while Abdus Salam, 36, died in a gunfight between two groups of drug-peddlers in Ramsagar on Saturday.
RAB raided the Basudev neighbourhood on information of drug dealing around 2:30am, said RAB-13 Dinajpur Camp Commander Talukder Nazmus Sakib.
“They fired at RAB and Sabdarul was killed on the spot when RAB retaliated.”
A pistol, four bullets, some marijuana and 95 bottles of Phensedyl have been recovered.
Sabdarul was a top listed drug and arms dealer, the RAB officer said.
A patrol team of police was dispatched to Ramsagar after receiving a report of a shootout, said Dinajpur Police OC Redwanur Rahim.
“Police rescued a bullet-hit body and took him to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital”, he added.
Later, the locals identified the dead as Salam.
Police recovered one pistol, four cocktail bombs, 200 bottles of Phensedyl and sharp weapons from the scene.


MYMENSINGH

The police killed one alleged drug dealer in Mymensingh’s Ishwarganj during a ‘gunfight’ on the wee hours of Friday.

The ‘drug dealer’ was identified as Shahzahan Mia, 30, who has several cases against him with police, said police sources.

Ishwarganj OC Badrul Alam Khan said, “We raided a garage at Athabari area following information of drug trafficking. Sensing our presence the group opened fire at us and we also fired in reply.”
Police found bullet-hit Shahzahan and took him to the state-run hospital where he was announced dead by the physicians.
The law enforcers found 200 grams heroine, five bullet cases and locally made weapons at the scene.

BARGUNA
A suspected drug dealer Sagir Khan has been killed in a gunfight on Saturday between two gangs of drug traffickers at Zakirtabak village Barguna, said police.
Police found the body of Sagir after reaching the scene.
Sagir had seven drug related cases at Barguna police station.
OC Masuduzzaman said police recovered a firearm, five bullets and 100 yaba tablets from the scene.


THAKURGAON
A man has been killed in ‘shootout’ with police in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Mobarak Hossain Kutti, 44.
Police conducted a drive to nab a group of drug-dealers at the Begunbari area based on a tip, said Thakurgaon Police OC Abdul Latif Mia.
“The drug-dealers fired at police when they had reached Begunbari and police returned fire. Mobarak was caught in the crossfire.”
Police recovered 100 yaba tablets from the spot.
PABNA
Another alleged drug-trader Abdur Rahman was killed during a shootout’ with police in Pabna on early hours of Saturday.
Police took him along on a drug raid to Mahendrapur, said Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Gautam Kumar Biswas.
“A group of Rahman’s cohorts attacked the police team with bullets and police fired back. He was shot while trying to flee.”
He was taken to Pabna General Hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead, said the police officer.
Police recovered firearms and 200 yaba tablets from the scene.

JOYPURHAT
A ‘drug-peddler’ named Rintu has been killed in so called gun fight involving RAB during an anti-drug drive in Panchbibi Upazila of Joypurhat on Saturday.
“RAB found Rintu’s body from the Indian border area adjacent to Panchbibi’s Bheempur after a gun battle. The doctor on duty declared him dead when he was taken to Panchbibi Upazila Medical Complex,” said Additional Police Superintendent and Joypurhat RAB-5 camp commander Shamim Hossain.
He said RAB recovered a pistol and ‘a huge amount’ of drugs from the scene.
The deceased was named in several narcotics cases across the district, he added.

KURIGRAM
Another ‘drug trader’ was killed in a special operation of police at Bhurungamari Upazila on the wee hours of Saturday.

The victim was identified as Ibrahim.

Ibrahim was taken to state run hospital with bullet injury. He died while being treated, said Superintendent of Police Mehedul Karim.


CHANDPUR
A ‘top listed’ drug dealer Bablu, 35, who was accused in five narcotics cases, has been killed in an alleged shootout with police in Chandpur’s Kachua Upazila.
“Bablu opened fire when the local police and detective branch police launched an operation in his house around 3am,”said Kachua Police Station OC Syed Mahbubur Rahman.
“He was shot when police returned fire. He was rushed to Kachua Upazila Medical Centre where the doctors declared him dead.”
Police recovered 110 Yaba pills from Babul’s house, the OC said.
