Ruqayyah hall students go on hunger strike, demand fresh polls

The students of the hall Rafia Sultana, Srobona Shafiq Dipti, Promee Khisha, Sheikh Sayida Afrin Shafi and Jayantee Raina took position in front of hall’s gate at 9pm on Wednesday (Mar 13).

Their other demands include the resignation of hall provost; ensuring security to the demonstrators and withdrawal of false case against newly elected Dhaka University Central Student's Union (DUCSU) VP Nurul Haque Nur, Liton Nandi, Umme Habiba Benzeer, Mousumi and 40 unnamed students.

Among the protestors, Sayida, was an independent candidate for assistant general secretary (AGS) post at the hall union polls.

She said, “We will continue our strike till our demands are met.”

At least 50 students were seen chanting slogans, expressing solidarity with the student protestors, at the time.

Earlier, students of Ruqayyah Hall on Tuesday (Mar 12) night at 10:30pm started staging demonstration inside the hall with their demands. After protesting for almost 11 hours they stopped their demonstration at 9:30am on Wednesday.

They alleged that the Provost of the hall Dr Zeenat Huda had cooperated with Chhatra League leaders and activists of the hall unit for rigging votes.
