Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is visiting the Chawkbazar fire victims at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The premier reached the hospital around 10am on Saturday (Feb 23), confirmed her press wing.

On Wednesday (Feb 20), a deadly blaze ripped through Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar, claiming at least 70 lives and injuring many more.

The fire reportedly originated on the ground floor of a building housing a chemical warehouse.

It quickly spread and morphed into a full-scale conflagration after a gas cylinder in a pick-up van exploded and gutted at least five buildings.

It took 37 fire-fighting units at least 15 hours to douse the flames before the fire burnt the buildings to ashes.

The prime minister has instructed authorities concerned to provide proper assistance to the victims’ families and medical treatment for the injured.
