Six dead in ‘shootouts’ across country

Rights activists have been long calling the government to probe such alleged shootouts, which they describe as extrajudicial killings.Alleged shootouts have left six people killed between Saturday midnight and Sunday morning across Bangladesh, police say.
The incidents were reported from Mymensingh, Feni, Barisal, Dinajpur, Jashore and Tangail. Police claimed four of the victims were ‘drug-traffickers’.
The police’s account on the six incidents is more or less similar— the victim getting caught in the cross-firing when a shooting erupted between his accomplices and law-enforcers.

MYMENSINGH
The Detective Branch (DB) reported the death of one 45-year-old Biplob, who they say was involved in peddling drugs.
DB’s district unit OC Ashiqur Rahman said that a shootout erupted between one of their teams and drug-traffickers during a raid at the city Mashkanda area.
The victim was caught in the cross-firing and died of gunshot wounds, he said adding two policemen have been also injured.
FENI
Police in the district’ Chhagalnaya Upazila claimed the death of a 32-year-old suspected drug trafficker.
OC M Morshed said the incident took place early in the morning at West Pathangor area during a raid to intercept a drug consignment. Shooting erupted when one Alamgir Hossain was shot and taken to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
He said police found two firearms, ammunition and sharp weapons from the spot.
Station OC M Morshed, Alamgir Hossain Bhuiyan was a ‘known drug trafficker’ and had been accused by name in nine cases at Feni Sadar, Phulgazi and Chagalnaya police stations.
DINAJPUR
Dinajpur’s Biral Upazila police reported the death of suspected drug-peddler, who goes by alias Galkata Babu.
OC Abdul Majid said the incident around 3:30am at Sardarpara area left two policemen injured.
“A police team was attacked during an anti-drug raid. They were forced to retaliate and Babu, was found shot dead after his accomplices fled.”
BARISHAL
An unidentified man was killed in Shayestabad area during a robbery in progress, reported the metro police detective branch.
Assistant Commissioner Nasir Mollik that police steeped patrolling in the area after recent reports of robberies. A shootout erupted between a police patrol and robbers early on Sunday morning.
“A body was found at the scene after the robbers fled” he said adding three policemen were injured.
JASHORE
A man identified as 35-year-old Dalim Hossain died in exchange of fires between two drug gangs, said police.
Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station OC Azmal Huda said the incident was reported from village at the outskirts of the city.
He said the police rushed to scene as soon as the shooting was reported and found a body on the scene.
A firearm, ammunition and 300 yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.
TANGAIL
Police in Mirzapur Upazila says a mugger, who has been identified as 22-year-old Emon died around 2am in a shooting incident.
OC AKM Mizanul Haq said that Emon was accused of mugging and robbery in several cases with the police.
“Muggers opened fire on a police patrol, when a shootout erupted and Emon was found shot on the spot by police,” he said.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead, said OC Haq adding two policemen were injured in the shooting.
