Candidates running in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-polls have been assigned polls symbols, which in effect set off the official campaign period on Sunday (Feb 10).

Polls logos for the election to elect councilors for the 36 new wards of both Dhaka city corporations were allocated as well.

Concerned returning officers allocated the polls logos to the mayor and councilor candidates on Sunday.

Top mayoral candidates Atiqul Islam (Awami League) was assigned ‘Boat’ as the polls loggo, Shafin Ahmed (Jatiya Party) ‘Plough’, Shahin Khan (Progressive Democratic Party) ‘Tiger’, Anisur Rahman (National People’s Party) ‘Mango’ and Abdur Rahim (Independent) got ‘Table Clock’.

The official campaigning period which started with the allotment of logos can continue until 32 hours before the voting, which sets the campaigning deadline  Feb 26 midnight.

On Jan 22, the Election Commission fixed Feb 28 for the Dhaka North mayoral by-election and polls to elect councilors for the 36 new wards to the North and South city corporations.

The office of the Dhaka North mayor fell vacant after the death of Annisul Huq on Nov 30, 2017.

The EC’s announcement of the schedule for the by-polls came six days after the High Court scrapped a stay order on it.
