BNP has filed a written petition to the Election Commission protesting the arrest of its activists by the police violating a court order.

Khulna City Corporation Returning Officer Md Yunus Ali said, “We got the written complaint from BNP. We are verifying the issue. If we find anything concrete, we would take action.”

Sonadanga police arrested former city Jubodal president Shafiqul Alam Tuhin Monday night. Local police also arrested some other leaders in other part of the city.

The officer-in-charge of Sonadanga claimed that it is not an election related arrest.

He said, “We arrested him [Shafiqul Alam Tuhin] because he is accused of a case filed last year.”

However, he avoided a question why he was not arrested before.

Meanwhile, BNP mayor candidate Nazrul Islam Manju demanded that KMP Commissioner Humayun Kabir, City Special Branch Deputy-Commissioner Kamrul Islam and officers-in-charge of six police stations should be removed as they are violating the court order.
