Launch terminal infrastructure being improved. FILE PHOTOThe infrastructure of the launch terminal is changing with 50 pontoons in 11 districts. Gradually, changes will be carried out in all terminals across the country.
Terminals with modern facilities will be connected to the shore, informed ministry of shipping sources.
Source also informs that keeping the demands of the passengers in mind, modern and luxurious water vessels are being constructed which will be bigger, better and spacious than the existing ones.
The new pontoon construction project will be implemented at a cost of Tk. 162 crore 71 lakh and the funds have already been approved by the ECNEC.
The total cost will be borne by the government while Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, BIWTA, will implement it within 30 June, 2020.
The immediate work will be in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Barishal, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Bhola, Khulna and Chandpur.
Speaking about the modernisation drive, shipping minister, Shahjahan Khan, says: “times have changed and people’s taste has improved so we need to provide services that are modern and comfortable.”
